Three steps: what your truck costs to run per mile, whether a load clears that once deadhead is counted, and what waiting to be paid is costing you. Everything runs on your figures and nothing is sent anywhere.

Paso 1

What is a good cost per mile for a trucking company?
There is no single right answer, because it depends on your truck payment, your insurance, your fuel economy and how many miles you actually run. Owner-operators commonly land somewhere between $1.50 and $2.20 per mile all in. What matters is knowing your own number rather than an industry average, because you judge every load against yours.
Should deadhead miles count when I price a load?
Yes. Deadhead miles cost you fuel, maintenance and driver pay exactly like loaded miles do, they just earn nothing. A load paying $2.10 a mile over 1,000 loaded miles is really paying $1.91 a mile if you drove 100 empty miles to reach it. The calculator adds deadhead into total miles for this reason.
How do I work out my fixed cost per mile?
Add up everything you pay monthly whether the truck moves or not, which is usually the truck and trailer payment, insurance, permits, ELD and software. Divide that by the miles you run in a month. The fewer miles you run, the more each one has to carry, which is why a slow month hurts twice.
Does factoring make a load more profitable?
No, and any calculator that says otherwise is selling you something. Factoring costs a fee, so a factored load nets slightly less than an unfactored one that pays in full. What it changes is when the money arrives. The question is whether getting paid this week rather than in 45 days is worth the fee to your business, which depends on what you would do with the cash.
What does it cost to factor an invoice?
It is a percentage of the invoice, and it varies by carrier, lane mix and volume. We have deliberately not put a number in this calculator because the honest answer is that it depends on your account. Type in whatever rate you have been quoted, by us or anyone else, and the tool will use it.
